RISK MANAGEMENT - Education PROGRAMS
MDAdvantage-Sponsored Communication Workshops
The Clinician-Patient Communication Workshop (4 CME credits) is a half-day, interactive program. Physicians discuss common challenging situations and are given the opportunity to practice communication techniques that increase the quantity and quality of information obtained during patient interviews. The techniques discussed also increase patient adherence to treatment plans. Since developing communication skills is an ongoing process, this workshop provides audiotapes and written materials subsequent to the program.
The Difficult Clinician-Patient Relationship Workshop (4 CME credits) is a half-day program addressing complex communication issues. Participants of this workshop identify the clinician-patient interactions that cause the most difficulty. Procedures and mechanisms for working with specific communication strategies are described. Through this workshop - which includes case studies and small group discussions - physicians learn how to apply the most effective strategies to deal with difficult situations.
Communication is an interpersonal skill. The first step in developing it is to identify communication problems and determine how to improve them. Communication: A Risk Management Tool (2 CME credits) highlights a main cause of malpractice litigation - poor clinician-patient communication. By providing the opportunity to examine your own communication skills, this workshop enables participants to identify good and bad practices. Clinicians participate in training exercises to learn the most positive approaches and to benefit from their effectiveness. This workshop also provides videotaped reenactments of clinician-patient conversations, allowing participants to see the verbal and non-verbal communication styles that make patients more comfortable.
